  • Airship Around the World - JULES VERNE
The story of the book began with the mysterious engineer Robur intruding on a meeting of the Weldon Aeronautical Club of Philadelphia. While the club members had heated discussions about how to construct a steerable airship, Robur came up with the boast that he had built a heavier-than-air hovercraft that was better than an airship in every way. This angered the members of the club, who were building a huge steerable airship called Go Ahead. Verne's inspiration was apparently the then-famous airship La France. A brawl ensues in which Robur is kicked out of the club. Shortly thereafter, Robur abducted two members of the club, its chairman "Uncle" Prudent and secretary Phil Evans, aboard his airship, the Albatross. Prudent's timid black servant is also kidnapped with them. The aim of the hijacking is Robur's attempt to prove the superiority of his hovercraft to the club members, which is why he took it on an adventurous trip around the world in three weeks.
